Hair loss is a rather unpleasant problem, most common among men. According to unofficial data, 70% of the middle-aged male population suffers from hair loss in one form or another. Today we will talk about the causes of male pattern baldness and how to deal with them.
Hair loss is a pathological process that men face more often than women. However, sometimes hair transplant for women also becomes a necessary procedure. The life cycle of hair is 4-6 years. The loss of 50-80 hairs per day is a normal process of renewal of the scalp for every person. However, if there are a lot more of them, we can talk about the presence of a problem that requires treatment.
Serious signs of alopecia among men are hair loss after washing and hair on the pillow, comb, and shirt collar. The first signs of alopecia appear in the frontotemporal zone. The bald patches tend to recede significantly from the hairline. Then, the parietal part of the head is affected. In the last stage of baldness, the thinned areas of the scalp may increase.
Most often, the cause of hair loss among men lies within the body.
Improper nutrition. Lack of the required amount of trace elements and vitamins (zinc, iron, vitamins A, and B) leads to the weakening of hair and hair loss.
Infections and chronic diseases. Fungal inflammation, fever, acute intoxication, venereal diseases are accompanied by hair loss.
Endocrine diseases. Malfunctioning of the thyroid gland, diseases with metabolic disorders cause consequences in the form of hair loss. If the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones, hair weakens and falls out all over the body, including the head. If hormones are produced in excess, hair begins to fall out gradually over the head and becomes coarse.
Hormonal changes. When taking steroids, athletes can also lose hair due to changes in testosterone levels.
Autoimmune diseases. Prolonged depression, vitamin deficiency, problems with the gastrointestinal tract cause a general weakening of the body, and as a result, there is a problem of hair loss and a slowdown in hair growth.
Oncological diseases. Hair loss in cancer can be associated with both general depletion of the body and anticancer processes (antibiotics, chemotherapy, or laser therapy).
Taking medications. Medicines for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes mellitus, as well as hormonal drugs have a negative effect on hair, contributing to hair loss.
Head trauma and burns. Deep damage to the skin is accompanied by the destruction of hair follicles, so hair stops growing in places of scars.
When other means do not work, people start thinking about hair transplants. According to the classification of the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), there are 2 main methods of hair transplant:
FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) - another name for STRIP. The doctor separates the donor’s hairs from a skin flap on the back of the head by cutting grafts, which are then transferred to the necessary area, taking into account the direction of hair growth. The method is highly invasive due to the larger area of intervention and the use of incisions.
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction). The most progressive and less invasive method of hair transplant, used in the hair transplant clinic of laser medicine MED CITY, which about ten years ago became a revolution in the world of aesthetic medicine and has proven itself today. It involves a seamless hair transplant without traumatizing the scalp. Using this method, a plastic surgeon can remove hairs from any available donor area.
For the safe and most comfortable extraction of the donor’s hairs, special rotating instruments are used, due to which the skin is damaged with minimal invasiveness and heals quickly.
Here are the key advantages of the FUE method:
No linear scar in the donor area. This is important for those who like to have their hair very short, so the scar can become visible.
Decreased healing time in the donor area. The small channels that are created with FUE heal in a much shorter period of time than a linear FUT / Strip scar.
Minor restrictions on physical activity after the procedure
With FUT, physical activity immediately after surgery can lead to an enlarged scar. The small channels created as a result of the FUE hair transplant do not expand and are not affected by exercise after the procedure, but nevertheless, you should not be zealous, at first only moderate physical activity is allowed.
Less postoperative discomfort in the donor area. With FUE, there is practically no discomfort after the procedure, there is no pain at all.
Helpful for repairing donor scars that cannot be removed. If a patient has previously undergone FUT and has an enlarged donor scar, the FUE procedure can be performed to transplant hair into the scar to help mask it.
Provides an alternative when the donor area is affected. If the patient has previously undergone one or more FUT procedures, the hair on the back of the head may not be sufficient for reoperation. In this case, the FUE procedure can correct the situation, since it allows taking hair not only from the back of the head but also from other areas.
Allows using thinner hair from the back of the head. It is necessary when using hairline or eyebrows.As you can see, when it comes to choosing a method of hair restoration, FUE preferably benefits!
Hair transplant FUE requires special preparation:
Making a preoperative package of analyzes of biological material for the presence of infectious diseases (HIV, hepatitis B, and C, syphilis, etc.), a clinical blood test, as well as a coagulogram. If necessary, the list of laboratory tests can be supplemented.
It is necessary to completely exclude alcoholic beverages from the diet for 2 days before the procedure;
It is necessary to avoid taking medications that reduce blood clotting (for example, aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) for 7 days before the procedure.
Not only head hair can be taken but also body hair, transplant donor areas can be the following:
beard;
back;
chest;
legs;
occiput area;
shoulders
1. Preparation of the donor area
The hair in the donor area is trimmed to the required length (often about 1-2 millimeters). Then the doctor extracts the maximum possible number of grafts from each square centimeter of this area. This guarantees the preservation of the current hair density and volume in the donor area.
2. Application of local anesthesia
3. Collection of grafts from the donor site
Special tools are used - cylindrical punches, which, acting like a spiral, unscrew the hair along with the follicle for further transplants. After the transplant, a special sterile bandage with a medicinal composition is applied to the donor area for quick healing of micro-wounds formed at the sites of extraction of the donor’s hair.
4. Preparation of the recipient area for hair transplant
With the help of special instruments, the doctor creates microscopic holes in the places where the donor's hair is implanted. This takes into account the natural angles of hair growth, as well as the diameter of the transplanted hairs.
5. Hair transplant
The doctor uses micro tweezers and as quickly as possible makes their infusion into the desired cavity at the site of alopecia. The faster this stage is carried out, the higher the guarantee of the transplanted hair survival rate.
Complete and proper hair care in the first month after the transplant is one of the factors that can help avoid damage to the transplanted hair, and our recommendations for care will help with this. The principles of hair care after transplant are quite simple. For the first two weeks, we recommend using only the means that a patient receives at the clinic. 3-4 weeks after the transplant, any other shampoo or hair strengthening product shouldn’t be applied.
The duration of a standard procedure hair transplant is 4-8 hours. In the evening, after its completion, and the next day, you will be in the clinic under the supervision of medical personnel. The transplant doctor will give you individual recommendations and he will tell you in detail about how to carry out daily care, how to use a headrest pillow, how to sleep properly the first few days after the transplant. After surgery, we recommend patients to avoid excessive physical activity and rest in your room. The day after the transplant, you can return to your normal life.
The morning after the hair transplant surgery, the specialists of the clinic will show how to wash hair properly and give you hair care products that must be used during the first 2 weeks, on an everyday basis.
Lotion is applied to the transplanted hair area and the donor area for 15-20 minutes.
Shampoo that is washed off immediately is used for delicate hair washing, removing excess lotion and sebum.
Daily routine and other important recommendations
During the first 10-14 days after the transplant, do not wear tight hats, including knitted, woolen or any other hats that may cause friction on the transplanted graft area or irritate the scalp. When outdoors, we recommend wearing a wide hat, which will save the scalp after the hair transplant procedure.
In closed rooms (home, office) for the first 2 weeks after the transplant, keep your head open, do not wear any hats. This is very important for the rapid healing of the donor area and eliminating the feeling of additional pressure on the scalp.
After a hair transplant, be sure to maintain a well-balanced diet with adequate amounts of protein. Without urgent need in the first 7-10 days after surgery, try to avoid heavy physical work and significant physical exertion. Office work, computer work, and reading are not prohibited. In the first 2-3 days after the transplant, try not to tilt your head forward, so as not to provoke the appearance of edema on the face!
Some patients have difficulties in sleep during the first night after the surgery and this may be due to psychological stress. Such psychological factors can also affect when, due to fatigue, the patient is prone to sleep, but curiosity and fear interfere with the natural process of falling asleep. Lack of quality sleep is not a sign of medical disorders and does not require mandatory medical adjustments.
From the first day after a surgery hair transplant and for the next several days, try to sleep on your back, avoiding the transplanted area coming into contact with a pillow or other objects. On the first night that the patient will definitely spend at the clinic, he will be given a special pillow.
The first few days after the operation, it is not advisable to lie on your side or sleep face down. This can provoke swelling of the face. After the first shampoo, patients feel much more comfortable. In most cases, good and adequate sleep is expected 5-7 days after the transplant.
With proper adherence to all the recommendations, after the procedure, there are no infectious complications and the swelling of the face is practically invisible. After the transplant, you may have redness and itching of the skin, small pimples, or muscle tension in the neck. You should not be afraid of this, since during this time the transplanted hair follicles activate their physiological functions, normal lymphatic drainage is restored, the process of healing and engraftment of grafts is actively underway. These are temporary phenomena and complaints that completely disappear within 2-3 weeks.
The first shampooing after the procedure is carried out by the specialists of the clinic. This procedure is performed the day after the transplant. All patients are given drugs and instructions for daily home care at the clinic. The transplanted hair should be taken care of daily, 2 times a day, during the first 2 weeks after the operation.
The first hairs from the transplanted follicles begin to grow about 2-3 months after the hair transplant. The full visible effect of the procedure occurs in 8-12 months.
For the first 10 days after the transplant, it is not recommended to smoke, to consume alcohol, to do active sports, to have significant physical activity, to sun base, that is, anything that can cause excessive sweating and a sharp change in the blood supply to the scalp.
10-15 days after the surgery, you can start doing light sports. For 2-3 weeks after the procedure, you should avoid swimming in the sea, pool, sauna, and other thermal procedures, as well as excessive ultraviolet exposure, to direct sunlight or solarium.
After the hair transplant, men are not recommended to cut their hair for the first 2 weeks. From the third week onwards, haircuts can be done with scissors. One month after the transplant, the head can be shaved, and only 2 months after the transplant, the hair can be cut with a trimmer. It is advisable to carry out the first haircuts with barbers who have experience of how to deal with the transplanted hair.
The transplanted hair will start growing a few days after the procedure. Approximately 3-4 weeks later, the physiological process of hair renewal and stress hair loss begins, which is called shock hair loss.
Shock hair loss is a physiological process that does not affect the transplanted follicles (hair roots do not fall out), so it should not frighten the patient. In fact, this process can be more accurately called hair breakage. The process of shock hair loss occurs gradually, the hair changes one by one. The duration and intensity of this process depend on the individual characteristics of the person and is determined by the physiological period of the life of each hair.
New hair from the transplanted follicles begins to grow after a period no earlier than 2-3 months after the transplant. Hair growth proceeds in the same way as before the procedure, over time the process progresses naturally. After about 8-12 months, all hairs in the transplanted follicles are completely replaced and grow back and you will be able to see the final result of your FUE procedure.
The hair transplant is contraindicated in patients in case of:
a history of diabetes mellitus in the decompensation phase;
the incidence of cancer at any stage;
the presence of infectious diseases in the acute stage (including sexually transmitted diseases);
there is a factor of violation of the mechanism of blood coagulation;
the period of pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding);
arterial hypertension;
chronic skin diseases;
the presence of implants in the heart muscle;
an allergic reaction to local anesthetics;
a deep state of depression or mental disorders,
insufficient amount of hair in the donor area for extraction and subsequent transplant.
Doctors do not recommend too young or too old people performing a hair transplant by any method. For example, if the patient is under twenty years old, then the result of the operation may be clouded in the future due to the unformed pattern of alopecia. And in older people, wound healing naturally occurs more slowly than at an earlier age. Thus, the risks of rejection of the transplanted donor hair are manifold. In any case, if the patient is worried about the problem of hair loss, it is necessary to make an appointment with a trichologist and a plastic surgeon. They will think of an individual solution plan.
The result of the procedure depends on the symbiosis of the following factors:
the quality of the seized transplant drafts;
the accuracy and correctness of the transplant technique;
complete adherence of the patient to the implementation of all the recommendations of the plastic surgeon without exception during the first 10-14 days after the hair transplant.
If a repeated transplant procedure is required in the same area where the hair transplant has already been carried out, then the patient should wait for at least 8 months. This is the minimum time required for most transplanted hairs to grow. If it is necessary to carry out a second transplant session in the area where there was no transplant, then it is enough to wait for 3-4 months. This time is necessary for the full restoration of the donor area.
1. Take vitamins that strengthen hair.
B-Complex vitamins such as B7 (biotin) and B12 play a very important role in the structure, quality, and healthy growth of hair. These vitamins also support nutrient metabolism by providing nutrients to the entire body, including hair and hair follicles.
2. Eat more fish, meat, and products rich in zinc and iron.
In cases of zinc deficiency, hair thinning and hair loss become a serious problem. For this reason, maintaining zinc is very important after a hair transplant. Zinc also plays a very important role in tissue repair, collagen production, cell proliferation, hormonal balance, vitamin absorption, and protein synthesis.
Iron deficiency, like zinc deficiency, can also cause hair loss. Iron strengthens hair, improves hair texture, and helps transport oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicles and scalp. Thanks to this important function of the iron, patients will be able to achieve the results they expect. In the same way, iron will strengthen the immune system and the recovery time will be shorter after hair transplant.
3. Massage the scalp daily
This will improve blood circulation and hair condition. The massage can be performed using special tools that strengthen and activate hair growth.
4. Avoid stress
Stressful situations and overexertion contribute to a decrease in immunity. In addition, proper sleep and rest are essential.
5. Be physically active
Exercise, an active lifestyle, and a contrast shower all help oxygenate the blood and increase blood flow in body tissues.
6. Practice good hygiene.
Hair under the influence of sebum begins to fall out more actively. Try to use neutral shampoos during the initial stages of hair loss.
